Customer Success: ImmerShare Scale × SJTU School of Design
When physical heritage accelerates toward decay under urban expansion, climate change, and geopolitical conflict, can digital technology preserve humanity’s collective memory?
At the 21st Annual Conference of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE), the School of Design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the Spatial Intelligence and Virtual-Real Fusion Design Laboratory launched the “Virtual Silk Road: Explorations in Digital-Intelligent Heritage Design” Exhibition.
Central to this project was SITU—a Cultural Heritage AI Agent Platform built to digitally reconstruct and safeguard endangered historical monuments along the Silk Road into an interactive, 3D digital atlas.

To deliver a cross-device 3D experience for global scholars and online visitors without local hardware barriers, SJTU integrated ImmerShare Scale (formerly LarkXR), Paraverse Technology’s Full-Stack Enterprise-Grade Cloud XR Streaming PaaS Platform.
SJTU’s Silk Road database spans nearly a decade of interdisciplinary research, incorporating massive 3D Gaussian Splatting, generative 3D AI models, and spatial computing environments across more than 30 ancient cities. Delivering these photorealistic environments presented three bottlenecks:
High Hardware Barriers: High-precision 3D environments required local high-end GPUs and large software downloads, restricting access for mobile, web, and tablet users.
Fidelity Loss on WebGL: Browser-native WebGL rendering degraded visual complexity, dynamic lighting, and interactive precision.
- Global Multi-User Latency: Hosting international scholars and visitors across Europe, Asia, and the Americas without distributed compute infrastructure introduced latency.
The Solution: Borderless Web Access via Global Distributed GPU Clusters
SJTU shifted graphics rendering from client devices to the cloud using ImmerShare Scale. Audiences visiting the SITU Platform could navigate to “Studio” → “Atlas” or “Gallery” to explore historical sites—including the Tang Dynasty Chang’an Great Ci’en Temple, Nalanda Temple, and Song Dynasty Shuomen Port—directly within standard web browsers.
- Seamless Web SDK Integration: ImmerShare Scale’s Web Client SDK allowed SJTU developers to embed interactive, cloud-rendered 3D viewports directly into their web application (situ.global), enabling instant access without local software installation.
- Efficient GPU Resource Pooling & Intelligent Allocation: Replaces rigid 1:1 vGPU passthrough with dynamic resource sharing(). Compute workloads are intelligently distributed across available public cloud GPUs, private IDCs, or consumer-grade GPU instances to maximize hardware utilization and multi-user concurrency.
- Proximity-Based Intelligent Routing: Measures real-time Round-Trip Time (RTT) to automatically route web traffic to the most optimal available rendering node, keeping camera navigation and spatial exploration responsive for global users.
- Hybrid & Infrastructure-Agnostic Deployment: Runs flexibly across private servers, public cloud infrastructure, or edge nodes, allowing institutions to leverage existing hardware assets without lock-in.
- Proprietary XLong Transport Protocol: Features adaptive bitrate control, dynamic frame capture, and optimized encoding/decoding to preserve visual clarity and interaction stability even on fluctuating public networks.
